“It’s not cool to not know what you’re talking about.”
So, over the weekend it came to light that Donald Trump might soon be receiving national-security briefings, as, barring a coup d’état in Cleveland, he’s gonna be coronated Lord Emperor Big Fingers Supreme (er, the Republican nominee). The easy joke is that it’s maybe one of the only times we’ll see “intelligence” and “Trump” in the same sentence, but it’s a scary thought, considering Trump is a reality-TV loudmouth whose most remarkable talent is conjuring up bluster.
As one former CIA analyst told NPR, such a thing “could be a disaster.”
I’m no national-security expert. But I would have to agree that it is probably unwise to give intelligence briefings to a stack of temperamental orange babies in a man suit. Thankfully, the decision of whether or not to grant Trump clearance is currently in the hands of the sitting president, who over the weekend took a few veiled shots at The Donald during a graduation speech Sunday at Rutgers University. It was funny, measured, optimistic without feeling mawkish—basically all the qualities that make Barack Barack.
“If you were to listen to today’s political debate, you might wonder where this strain of anti-intellectualism came from,” said President Obama. “So, class of 2016, let me be clear as I can be: In politics and in life, ignorance is not a virtue. It’s not cool to not know what you’re talking about.”
Really gonna miss this guy. Especially if the Democrats blow it in November and Trump gets his stubby finger smudges all over the nuclear codes. Scary!
