Just say no (to dad jeans).
Russell Crowe, hoverboard advocate and forever gladiator, has been flying under the radar, style-wise, during the press tour of his new movie, The Nice Guys. Having Ryan Gosling as a co-star will do that to a man (especially when Gucci is involved). Yesterday at Cannes, however, Crowe made his presence known—unfortunately, it was not in the most chill way.
While everyone else was all movie-star sunglasses and button-up shirts without ties, Crowe decided to show his off-duty style by wearing jeans that were too big, too faded, and too long to have been purchased in 2016 (and if they were, for shame). It’s a move we’ve seen before on George Clooney, Barack Obama, and countless other respectable men since the style became popular in the 1990s. And man, does it kill the vibe.
Instead of restating how jeans should look and fit for the umpteenth time, let’s try this: If you’re not sure if you can trust your own taste in denim—if you own jeans that look a little bit like Crowe’s pair, that’s you—maybe err on the side of caution and be the guy who wears a suit to daytime events. Because if you’re going to be old-school, you might as well really go for it. For proof of the worthiness of this swap, just look at how sharp Crowe looked later that night in a simple black suit and white shirt. No contest.
